This search began offering a base salary range of $130K to $150K. The hire closed at a $140K base.

Our client is a founder-led B2B SaaS business, under 15 employees, selling into a regulated market. They had recently taken private equity growth capital, which resulted in the opportunity to begin to expand the business into new markets while also deepening their product capability for their existing customer base. This was the first Product Manager the company had ever hired. Until this search, the Founder/CEO had been doing the job himself alongside everything else a founder does.

The 2 main requirements for this search included:

  • Experience managing a successful product with paying customers, while prioritizing what will deliver the greatest value to customers.
  • Capable of establishing a scalable, repeatable product delivery process.
We introduced our client to 6 candidates who they interviewed.

The Domain Specialist – asking: $140K base

  • Ten years of product management, all of it in the same regulated vertical the client sells into. A founding PM twice. Took one platform from zero to an MVP in 4 months. Took another product from a handful of pilots to one of its company’s highest revenue lines.
  • This candidate reached the final step of the process (the in-person round) and did well.
  • The client passed. WHY? This candidate shone from a 0-1 perspective and on domain expertise, and had less experience maturing a product business.

The Platform Data PM – $165K base

  • A decade in the same vertical, most recently a Senior PM on data products at a large US SaaS platform. Built that company’s first ecosystem of integrations. Ran a strategic customer pilot that converted into a four-year partnership.
  • This candidate did not advance past interview #1 because others had greater market-facing experience. This candidate presented as more “technical”.

The Enterprise Analytics PM – $160K base

  • Deep product experience in analytics and BI.  Took four AI reporting agents from concept into production. At a previous SaaS company, lifted adoption of the flagship report by 60% and took a new platform to 50% of its serviceable market within six months.
  • This candidate reached the final in-person round.
  • They declined hiring this person over someone who had domain expertise in the industry our client sells to.

The One Above the Pay Band – asking: $165K to $180K base

  • Ten years of product, five of them in the client’s vertical and three in data analytics and AI. Moved customer win rates from 10% to 25%.
  • Cut after the first conversation with the CEO. Wrong fit.

The One Who Turned It Down

$170K plus bonus and options.

  • The strongest commercial track record of the group. Built a zero-to-one analytics product that generated $1.75M in net new ARR in its first 12 months.
  • Before that, full P&L ownership of a $50M+ ARR product and $3M of ARR growth through global expansion. Led two replatformings.  A former engineer and former founder.
  • This candidate was presented with an offer, which they turned down for another opportunity which was better aligned with their interests AND was in a better location for hybrid.

The Hire

Offer accepted at $140K base.

  • This candidate had been earning $130K base in their previous role.
  • Strong domain expertise: 8 years in the client’s vertical.
  • Managed two products at a B2B SaaS platform company with an automated regulatory reporting product.

WHY the client said yes to this candidate:

  • They had the domain expertise. They had built analytics products. And critically, they had spent years building on a product that already had customers, which is the actual job they were hiring someone to do.
  • They had also worked at both a startup and a large enterprise, so they understood where speed belongs and where structure belongs. Their stated approach to building process at a nine-person company was simple, practical frameworks, not enterprise bureaucracy.

WHY the candidate said yes:

  • They were choosing between multiple live processes and picked this one on stage and scope, not on money.
  • They wanted to be the most senior product person in a business, and to grow a business, not merely manage features.

KEY INSIGHTS:

Four of the six candidates were asking at or above $160K. None of them got the job.

The client was focused on startup fit, hands-on capability, delivery strengths over 0-1 discovery, domain knowledge, growth of a mature product and location compatibility for a hybrid model.

Most Founders hiring their first PM almost always write the job as building from nothing. This client hired the LEAST zero-to-one candidate of everyone they met.

The hired candidate signed back their offer the next day, and the search closed 36 days after the first candidate conversation.
